Bruce The Nomad Move to Windy Point
This travel log is for our summer life in Wenatchee National Forest as Camp Host at Soda Springs Campground, and now at Windy Point.

Hi Y'all,
Yep, I still have a little Virginia left in me.

Well I survived the last two weeks of being a "renta cop" style Forest Ranger at Soda Springs. It was fairly busy , especially on the weekend. Not as hectic as some of the past weeks, however. I moved on Monday to Windy Point, an appropriately named location. More on that later.

I now have somethings to write about. Last week, on Wednesday, my boss invited me to join he and his brother, who also hosts a campsite, at the local minor league baseball game. Yeh, I know, me going to a baseball game? (Andre, don't laugh.) We watched the local team - the Yakima Bears, beat up the Tricities Dust Devils. It was a decent game - not too much "scratching and spitting." It was a little chilly in the stands though. But the beer was cold and the footlong hot dogs were GREAT!

My boss, while being a nice guy, he may have an ulterior motive for this kindness, like feeling bad because he creamed me at poker the week before. Of course I had taken them all for the previous two weeks. We usually play on Monday night. Both he and his boss have also been trying to get me to commit to returning here next summer. I haven't yet since I'm trying to get a job in Santa Fe, NM as a host there, or at Lake Tahoe, north shore California. I'm trying to delay this decision until after I talk with the Forest Service Supervisor in Santa Fe.

Yesterday, Sunday, the local district manager hosted a picnic for our area. Tom, my boss, grilled pork ribs that were fabulous. We also had sausages, corn on the cob cooked in the fire, pot-luck salads, vegies, desserts, and cold beverages. It was a good time as well as a time for the Boss's boss to give us the obligatory certificate and coffee cup. It was a good time to finally meet some of the other people involved as camp host for this region.

I informed Tom, and his boss at the Sunday meeting, that I really wanted to take a job in New Mexico, Santa Fe with the Forest Service, if available, or at Lake Tahoe with the same company. A company recommendation would be given for me to go to Tahoe. I should know within a week or so where I will go next summer.

On Monday, I made the move to Windy Point Campground which is located next to the Tieton River. The water comes from a couple of water-shed lakes nearby. This time of year the powers-to-be let significant water out of the lakes which makes river rafting really good. Not as good as the Gauly or New River rapids, in VA or WV, but pretty good. I have gotten settled in with the girls, both of them are eying the river, but it is too swift for them to go swimming, at least here at the campground. My site is right on the river, the back of the MH is only 4 feet from the water, and the sound of the flowing water and rapids is almost loud. And watching the water flow by is mesmerizing. I had to turn up the volume on the cd player to hear my oldies. I know I will sleep really well tonight with this wonderful "white noise".

Below are a few photos of some of the sites we've enjoyed during our short stay in Wenatchee Forest and at our new location.

This shot is of Molly waiting to get moving to our new location. Actually she wants to go play frisbee. Here is Digit resting between her duties as navigator. The trip is only about 45 miles. The best part is now I only have to drive 5 miles to get a phone and internet signal.
This shot is of the motorhome at the new location. It is shaded and next to the river which is roaring, yet peaceful at night.
This mountain is visible from the front window of the RV. This is just one example of some of the rock formations in the canyon.
This view of the river I took standing at the rear of the motor home. I took this shot at sunset after I got the dogs fed.
This photo is of our campsite with large oak trees and a few evergreens. The ground is covered with dry grass yet it all looks and feels quite nice. This canyon is called Oak Creek.

I hope to get a few shots of the rafters this weekend, when it gets very busy. I may try a trip down the river if I can go on Thursday. More on this later, if I survive. I have included a few shots of us and the landscape for your enjoyment.

As I said in the last email, I plan to leave here in a couple of weeks, about the 22nd of Sept. I will go over to Portland for a day or so, down to Salem, see Herb and Norma, then on to Eugene to get another Solar panel installed. The two I have have worked well, except here in the forests I get only about 4 hours of direct sun, as opposed to the desert where I get 10 hours. So another panel should allow me more power in less time to support my needs. TV for car races and Music and lights the rest of the time, as needed.

From there I want to go over the pass to Bend. I haven't seen it since late 89. I have been told that there has been major growth there.

I will send more information of the area in the next episode of our adventures as we move into the fall season.

Bye for now.
Bruce, Molly and Digit
